"It’s quite apropos that the boys of Delta Spirit entitled their sophomore LP History From Below. Their sound is rich with the trappings of rock history and they undoubtedly respect their elders and idols. So, it’s even more fitting that the band called their new EP Waits Room , named for a very special room in Prairie Studios in Cotati, CA.
The Waits in Waits Room is (you guessed it) for none other than Tom Waits, who has been recording in that very studio since 1991. In an interview with SoundSpike earlier this year, frontman Matt Vasquez said Waits tore up a closet to make the room while recording Mule Variations. While it used to be a place to hang your coat, Vasquez says the room now offers some rare musical opportunities.
“We did a lot of vocals in there,” Vasquez said of the room, which has been likened to an echo chamber. “And we did a lot of ‘St. Francis’ in there. We were recording it live and there’s a water heater in there and you hear this ‘clang!’ in the middle.”"
